[SMM Steel Shipping] Last week, China's total steel exports increased by 21% WoW

SMM reported that the total steel shipments from main ports in China reached 7.3571 million mt, up 304,600 mt WoW, an increase of 4%.

Last week (2024.11.16-2024.11.22)

SMM reported that the total steel shipments from main ports in China reached 7.3571 million mt, up 304,600 mt WoW, an increase of 4%. Among them, the total shipments from the six major northern ports (Jingtang Port, Caofeidian Port, Bayuquan Port, Tianjin New Port, Huanghua Port, Jinzhou Port) were 3.0324 million mt, up 502,400 mt WoW, accounting for 41% of the total shipments. The total shipments from the three major ports in east China (Shanghai Port, Zhangjiagang Port, Lanbei Port) were 598,700 mt, up 44,400 mt WoW, accounting for 8% of the total shipments. The total shipments from the two major ports in south China (Zhanjiang Port, Fangchenggang) were 448,100 mt, down 77,400 mt WoW, accounting for 6% of the total shipments.


2. Arrival Data

Last week (2024.11.16-2024.11.22)

SMM reported that the total steel port arrivals in China were 7.2561 million mt, down 104,200 mt WoW, a decrease of 1%. Among them, the total arrivals at the 13 main ports in east China were 416.64 mt, up 40,000 mt WoW, accounting for 57% of the total arrivals. The total arrivals at Guangzhou Port in south China were 634,200 mt, up 166,100 mt WoW, accounting for 9% of the total arrivals.


Steel Shipping under Foreign Trade
1. Departure Data

Last week (2024.11.16-2024.11.22)

The total steel port departures globally (excluding China) were 2.257 million mt, down 2% WoW. The total steel port departures from Chinese ports were 2.9196 million mt, up 21% WoW.

By product type,

Last week, the global port departures of steel plates were 110,000 mt, down 46% WoW. The global port departures of steel coils were 352,900 mt, down 50% WoW. The global port departures of pig iron were 811,900 mt, up 27% WoW. The global port departures of steel billets were 577,700 mt, up 17% WoW.

2. Arrival Data

Last week (2024.11.16-2024.11.22)

The total steel port arrivals at 119 ports in China were 53.25 mt, up 18,700 mt WoW, an increase of 4%.

This week, ferrous metals were in the doldrums, with coking coal and coke staging a mid-week rise. At the beginning of the week, financial markets experienced sharp fluctuations, dragging down sentiment in the ferrous chain and leading to a pullback in futures. Mid-week, Indonesia's cut to coke production quotas drove coking coal and coke futures to lead the gains, though the impact was more pronounced on thermal coal, while coking coal's rise was largely sentiment-driven and short-lived. In the latter part of the week, finished products continued their seasonal inventory buildup, and support from the raw material side weakened, causing the entire ferrous chain to pull back. In the spot market, with the Chinese New Year holiday approaching, purchasing activity slowed down further, with end-users only making limited, as-needed purchases at low prices.
